Matalyn Ament is a graduating Sociology major who is passionate about education, social justice, and people. She’s very thankful to receive this award and for her hard work to be recognized. Matalyn would like to give a shout-out to all of her amazing professors for not only providing her with knowledge on subjects she's passionate about, but for also constantly supporting and encouraging her during her time at Saint Mary's.

While earning my degree, my greatest supporters were

My family, friends, & professors. My family provided me with endless love & support in every way they could & I couldn't thank them enough for their unwavering belief in me. My friends helped me make the most of my college experience, both academically & socially. My professors were some of the most compassionate people I've met & constantly encouraged me in my studies.

My favorite SMC memory is

I've made countless memories at SMC, but I have to say I’ll miss the little things the most; meeting up with friends in between classes, cooking dinner with my roommates, game nights at friend’s apartments, laughing a little too loud in the library & almost getting kicked out, Sunday morning Starbucks runs. These all revolve around the amazing people I’ve met. Thank you for being you, ILY.

I'm looking forward to most

After seeing the amount of growth I had in my years at SMC, I can’t wait to see what the future will bring. I’m looking forward to continuing my education, but I'm also looking forward to the life lessons & experiences I’ll have in the next chapter of my life. Whatever the future brings, I hope I can be a source of light for those around me & that I can always find happiness within myself
"Be easy" My niece used to always say this when she was little. Throughout college, & especially during quarantine, I found myself repeating this phrase to myself. Be easy on yourself and on others. It's so easy to put pressure on yourself or to forget what others are going through, but at the end of the day we are all trying our best so let's go easy on ourselves & each other.
